Hanatoros "flower and light road", is a set of illumination events that take place in the Higashiyama District of Kyoto in March and the Arashiyama district of Kyoto in December. During Hanatoro the streets are illuminated by thousands of lanterns set throughout popular areas combined with flower and light displays.
Many temples and shrines are illuminated and have special extended viewing hours. In addition, live and street performances are held at stages around the area. The pleasant and unique atmosphere of Hanatoro attracts many visitors who can stroll the streets and see a different side of Kyoto.
Benishidare Concert in Heian Jingu from April 9 to 12, 2015.
Heian Jingu Shrine was built in 1895 to commemorate the transfer of the capital from Nara to Kyoto 1100 years before. People in Kyoto was disappointed that the Emperor Meiji moved from their town to Tokyo, which meant they lost their status of the capital dwellers at that time. Instead of it, this grand shrine has consoled them.
This cherry tree was presented by Endo Yoji, the Mayor of Sendai in 1895, when Heian Jingu Shrine was build. Originally, it was called "Ito Zakura", or a thread cherry tree, kept in Konoe Family, one of the highest aristocrats in Kyoto, but the Lord of the Tsugaru Clan took and grew it into his domain in Aomori Prefecture long time ago. So, it sometimes called "Satogaeri Zakura", or the returened cherry tree.
Tanizaki Jun'ichiro, a famous novelist, wrote about this tree in his work of "Sasame Yuki". We regard it as a symbolic cherry tree of the spring of Kyoto, and is the most popular here of Shin'en.
A live music concert will be performed in the evening in the shrine garden. You would be amazed a full of beautiful illuminated weeping cherry trees in the South and East Shin-en Garden. What an exotic Spring night in Kyoto.
Seats are not set up for this concert, so you can freely enjoy strolling through the garden while listening to such spiritual classical music.

Do you konw the Koyasan (Mount Koya) Shingon Buddhism ?
Mount Koya (Koyasan) is the center of Shingon Buddhism, an important Buddhist sect which was introduced to Japan in 805 by Kobo Daishi (also known as Kukai), one of Japan's most significant religious figures. A small, secluded temple town has developed around the sect's headquarters that Kobo Daishi built on Koyasan's wooded mountaintop. It is also the site of Kobo Daishi's mausoleum and the start and end point of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
Kobo Daishi began construction on the original Garan temple complex in 826 after wandering the country for years in search of a suitable place to center his religion. Since then over one hundred temples have sprung up along the streets of Koyasan. The most important among them are Kongobuji, the head temple of Shingon Buddhism, and Okunoin, the site of Kobo Daishi's mausoleum.
Koyasan is also one of the best places to experience an overnight stay at a temple lodging (shukubo) where you can get a taste of a monk's lifestyle, eating vegetarian monk's cuisine (shojin ryori) and attending the morning prayers. Around fifty temples offer this service to both pilgrims and visitors.
Do you konw the three most scenic spots in Japan?
Japan is island nation of unique beauty, but three locations are traditionally accepted as being the three most scenic spots of Japan. We may ask, how were these places selected? During Japan's Edo period(1600-1867) a Confucian scholar, Shunsai Hayashi, wrote a book based on his experiences as he traveled throughout Japan on foot. In his book, "Nihon Kokujisekikou" ("Observations About the Remains of Japan's Civil Affairs"), he bestowed his unqualified praise on the three locations in Japan he thought offered travelers the most scenic beauty in the nation. The scenic masterpieces of Matsushima, Amanohashidate, and Miyajima are as spectacular today as they were in the Edo period. These three remarkable sites, textured by the sea and abundant greenery, have not only touched the hearts of millions of people, but have also served as a colorful background to history itself. The exqusite beauty of these sites has inspired poets, writers, ans artists to immortalize the scenic charm and awe inspiring vision of Japan. Japan's Meccas that eceryone wants to visit at least once.
Matsushima has been boasting of its beauty, since the Heian period, and is designated as a national special scenic beauty and a prefectural natural park. A lot of people who visit this place were moved by its beauty and admired it by drawing pictures or composing poems.
The views from four directions, north, south, east and west entices people with the beauty of a different scene from each perspective. A perfect balance between the contrast of colors created by green pine trees and the figurative beauty produced by small islands floating on the large sea is kept, and its beauty is unchanged from whichever direction.
According to the ancient book "Ko-Fudoki" a ladder was placed so that the male God Izanagi-no-Mikoto could go back and forth between the heavens and Manaihara in the north of the beach of Kushibi where Izanami-no-Mikoto lived. Izanagi-no-Mikoto named this ladder Amanoukihashi, and went back and forth between the heavens and the earth.
One day Izanagi-no-Mikoto was careless and failed to return to heaven. While sleeping on the earth, Amanoukihashi fell to the ground and became Amanohashidate. So the ladder that connects the Gods in the heavens and the men on the earth was lost.
However, the relationship between the Gods and the people was strengthened after alland there was no end to the number of people who visited the mysterious road with the white sands and green pine trees. Kaminoyoni Kaminokayoishi Michinareya Kumoinitsuzuku Amanohashidate (Amanohashidate, which rises to the clouds, used to be the road the Gods went back and forth in the ancient God`s time)
Ohe-yama Ikunonomichino Tookereba Madafumimomizu Amanohashidate(The road to Mt. Ohe is so far that we cannot reach Amanohashidate yet.) Total length of this sand-spit is 3.6km, and its width varies from 20m to 170m. About 8,000 pine trees are growing thick in the sand, and its appearance is like a bridge swinging in the heaven.
The park is dotted with historic sites such as the poetry monument of the Showa Emperor and famous poets, and you can feel the thoughts that ancestors gave to Amanohashidate. As a present of God which enriches people's heart, Amanohashidate is maintaining the figure in now.
From ancient times, people have sensed the spiritual sanctity of Miyajima, and have reverd and worshipped the island itself as a god. The main shrine is said to have been constructed in 593, the first year of the Empress Suiko.
The first record of Itsukushima Shrime in Japanese history was in the Nihon Koki(Notes on Japan), dated 881, and it was noted Itsukushima Shrine along with other famous shirines.
During the era of Taira-no-Kiyomori, it became a place of worship for the Heike clan, and around 1168, the main shirine building was constructed. As the power of the Heike clan increased, the number of worshippers at the shirine increased, the shrine itself began to become known among the members of the Imperial Court, and its grandeur became more and more magnificent.
The emperor and the Impeiral Court paid visits to the shrine, and the culture of the Heian period was amiably incorporated. Bugaku, ancient Japanese musical court dance, also began during this period. Even after the fall of the Heike clan, the culture of the Heian period was warmly accepted by the Genji clan and the shirne continued to experience a stable and prosperous era.

As far as you know, Japan is known for its cherry blossoms in spring season and its colored leaves in autumn season. I don't know how many people know this, but Japan is one of very famous winter resorts in the world. Usually, we take night bus around midnight from city to go to HAKUBA and NOZAWA where you can enjoy ski, and start skiing from early in the morning to night. Whatever you take bus or train, it takes less than 8 hours from Kyoto to get HAKUBA and NOZAWA. However, you can start skiing from the morning if you choose to take night bus, and you won't waste your time with transfer. It would be wonderful if we can help your winter travel makes memorable one.
